The new Nano Traxion by @petzl_official is the latest in an evolution of their progress capture pulley devices. It is small, light and simple meaning that it will now live on my harness for rock, ice and alpine climbing. In the early 2000s, I had the Mini Traxion which was great for big wall hauling but was too chonker to carry for glacier travel or free climbing. Then in the 2010s, the Micro Traxion came out and I began always carrying it on glaciers for potential crevasse rescue, since it offered mechanical advantage, progress capture and rope ascension in one small unit. However, I still felt it was a bit too big to bring rock or ice climbing, especially since most cliff rope rescue scenarios are more descent focused. Finally, I now feel good about having the new Nano Traxion as a permanent fixture on the back of my harness for multi pitch rock and ice due to its diminutive, compact size. Now I will always be equipped for easy rope ascension, pack hauling or low-friction rescue raises.
